A love letter from Isaiah Falls.
You’re from Orlando, Florida. How did growing up there shape your music?
Orlando is a small melting pot that allowed me to be raised around different people and cultures, which ultimately led to my music having a variety of inspirations. So much of Florida’s soundscape, like crickets, live music, and its culture, can be heard within my albums.
You’ve described love as a major source of inspiration in your music. Growing up, which artists drew you toward the love-song tradition? Were there particular artists or songs whose storytelling inspired you to explore those themes in your own lyrics?
Absolutely: SWV, Jon B, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and Justin Timberlake. They all taught me that love is boundless, so writing these songs allowed me to express myself freely.
Love songs can take so many forms: first love, passion, heartbreak, longing, desire. Where do you think “TABOO” sits within that spectrum?
Passion and desire. Everyone can understand the need for someone else.
On LVRS PARADISE (SIDE B), there’s an interlude featuring Big Boi offering questions to consider before committing to a relationship. What did that moment mean to you for the larger conversation about love on the project?
I feel blessed to have someone’s guidance who’s been in the game for so long. It meant a lot to me; I looked up to him and Dre since I was a kid. I think his perspective was well said.
Your For LVRS ONLY playlist draws heavily from R&B from the late ’90s and early 2000s, with artists like D’Angelo, Aaliyah, Brandy, and Usher. What about ’90s and 2000s R&B resonates with you?
It’s their ability to be true to themselves and let that feeling seep into the music; that’s always been something I’ve aspired to have in my music.
